A router bit’s performance depends on two main factors; it’s cutting quality and it’s life span. Performance comparison tests were conducted on Freud router bits with particular focus on cutting life and finish.
Straight router bits with identical dimensions (1/2″ cutting diameter, 1/2″ shank, 2 flute) were mounter on a CNC router. A number of 1/4″ deep grooves were then routered into a chipboard-melamine coated panel.
The performance evaluation was based on the number of chips on the melamine coating and averaging the first and last 33 routed feet.
Initially, all router bits performed in a similar way but as the number of routed feet increased it was soon clear that the Freud router bit gave a far superior performance to the other bits.
