Intumescent Door Hinge PadsIntumescent protection for ironmongery has long been the ‘norm’ for testing, however in the day to day life of the Joiner it can be seen as one extra too far! Well it should not and for the cost of the relatively inexpensive units together with the latest ½ mm range this is one area we could all look at again. All steel hinges have a detrimental effect to a timber fire door in as much as it transfers its heat from one face of the door to the other in a quicker method than timber together with being a ‘heat sink’ exaggerating the effects of the fire. The answer in a lot of instances is to protect the timber from the potential ‘hot spot’ by creating a layer of highly insulating intumescent material between the two surfaces. The products listed below have excellent insulation properties and offer superb protection for doorsets up to 60 minutes performance.

Intumescent CladdingPrimarily used to protect ironmongery within a 30 or 60 minute fire door intumescent sheet has many uses to the fire door designer. Use the products to both create an insulating effect restricting the heat, which travels far quicker through steel than timber, from eroding the timber within a fully developed fire situation potentially causing a failure to the door. Secondly it may be used to negate the effect ironmongery fixed onto the face of a door such as a door closer would have, again by the excess heat generated at a single point, by simply placing a layer in between the closer and face of the door.
